The Bay Area weather is quite dreary today. Not quite a steady stream of rain, which we
need, but the slow and consistent drizzle.
There is nothing like a vivid berry and banana smoothie to brighten a
Sunday morning. I happen to have all ingredients on hand to make hubby and me a
nutritional glass of fruit wonderfulness to start our Sunday.
I have had the wonderful privilege of working as a Dole Ambassador
for 2015. With the year winding down, I
wanted to share one last recipe that highlights the mission that Dole has
undertaken to spread the word about how valuable fruits and vegetables are to
include in your everyday diets. A
smoothie is a perfect start to any day of the week and so simple to prepare
even with our busy schedules.
I believe the banana may just be one of the world’s most
perfect foods. They are a great source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Bananas
contain potassium which provides a cardiovascular benefit and is an essential
mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. The average banana
contains 400+ mg of potassium. Banana’s have a second benefit which involves
their sterol content. As these sterols look structurally similar to cholesterol,
they can block the absorption of dietary cholesterol. This helps to keep our
blood cholesterol levels in check. The
mix of vitamins, minerals, and low glycemic carbohydrates in bananas has made
them a fruit of choice among athletes.
was clear that both bananas and blueberries were “super fruits” of sorts. Blueberries contain antioxidants that have
benefits to the nervous system and brain health. There is new evidence that blueberries can
improve memory. They help with the blood sugar regulatory system and
antioxidant protection of the digestive tract (especially with respect to the
colon and its risk of cancer). This is
an amazing antioxidant fruit.
This incredibly tasty smoothie is both simple and
tasty. I actually recommend freezing the fruit.
It helps to produce a frozen smoothie that has great texture. You can also add kale to add more fiber and nutritional benefits. Cheers to your health!
